Simon Howard

CEO

BCom CA GradDipFP MAppFin

I have worked in the professional services industry since starting my career in the Taxation Division of EY in 2000. I enjoyed travelling when younger and have worked in various roles overseas and in Australia before returning to Perth in 2010 to join Knight in my current role.

I believe in continuous learning and have done additional studies in Applied Finance and Financial Planning as these were the areas that interested me and allowed me to improve the way I contribute to Knight. I enjoy the stimulation of working with energetic and motivated people and like the challenge of making things the best they can be (read: I hate inefficiency).

I like to give back to the communities I am part of via my roles as Vice President of the Christ Church Grammar School Old Boys Association, Honorary Treasurer at Perth Flying Squadron Yacht Club and Team Manager of my son’s Claremont Junior Football Club Team.

I love the Perth lifestyle and try to soak it up as much as I can by riding my bike, spending time with family and friends and generally getting out into the great outdoors.

Head of Financial Advice

BBus GradDipFP FFin CFP®

I joined Knight in 2005 to add some financial advice experience to the business. I hope to bring a practical approach to the advice that I give to my clients and enjoy helping them work towards a better financial position for themselves and their family. I’d like to think I provide sensible advice with a focus on setting up sustainable financial structures that will work over the long term.

I enjoy helping people realise their financial objectives and focus on ensuring they don’t merely follow advice but understand it. Many clients I deal with are in a vulnerable position and that drives me to ensure they are given the support and guidance they need. I believe in providing advice and a plan that can be easily implemented and can evolve with a client’s circumstances.

I love watching the Western Bulldogs play and will happily spend half a day fishing.

I joined Knight in 1996 and have over 20 years of experience in providing accounting, taxation and business advice to a broad range of clients. My clients include many independently wealthy individuals and a broad range of small-to-medium sized businesses primarily from the professional services, building and construction and mining services.

I love advising small business, helping them maximise profit and lifestyle. I regularly provide advice concerning budgeting, benchmarking and analytical reporting, risk management, asset protection business valuations, acquisitions and sales.

Outside of work I am family and community focused. I am actively involved in Caversham Junior Football club as coach and the Swan Valley Sporting Club as chairman. My association in sporting clubs spans 25 years and my achievements have been from being duel premiership coach, facilitating cultural change to turning a once struggling club into a financial powerhouse through business principles I have developed over my 30 year public accounting journey.

My philosophy in work and life has always centred around quality, sincerity and respect. After 30 years in the industry, my greatest achievements have been the bond and friendship I have developed with my clients. Through ups and downs, twists and turns it has been my honour to serve and be there for them to watch them grow or simply to help them get through to the other side.

I started at Knight as a Financial Planner in 2006 after spending three years as a Paraplanner at DFS Advisory Services in Melbourne, a role which provided me with a very strong technical understanding of strategies for high net worth clients.
I graduated from RMIT University and have completed my Certified Financial Planner accreditation. I have done further studies by completing my CIMA® certification.

I enjoy helping client achieve their long term financial goals. I try to provide highly personalised wealth creation and risk protection strategies for the people I advise so they can achieve their long term goals. I particularly focus on providing advice in relation to Self Managed Super Funds and direct equity portfolios.

Financial and business decisions can be some of the most stressful situations someone can find themselves in. My great passion is assisting my clients navigate these situations and helping them get all of the facts and necessary information to make the right decision.

I understand that no single approach is the right one for everyone, and this is why I love taking the time to get to know my clients to build a business “friendship”. This allows me to tailor my approach and provide the kind of service they desire.

My educational background includes a Bachelor of Commerce from Murdoch University, Chartered Tax Adviser, and CPA qualifications. Professional development is very important to me and that is why I invest a lot of time in keeping up to speed with the latest taxation and accounting developments. Since starting as a graduate accountant in 2002 I have gained a broad experience assisting my clients who include Medical professionals, property developers, and tradespeople. I also spent 4 years as the internal Company Accountant for a family business, so have spent time on both sides of the accounting world.

In my spare time, you can find me hanging out with my family. This involves travel for their dance classes and swimming lessons, or bike rides along the South Perth foreshore

My interest in business, accounting and finance came from my parents who owned a small business with 4 other parties. I would work there in the holidays and ask the finance director questions constantly.

The professional services industry appealed because I would get the chance to work with multiple businesses and learn far quicker than working in one business at a time. Studying both Commerce and Law degrees pushed me towards tax.

I left New Zealand for a working holiday to the US and Canada and achieving a life goal to become a ski instructor. With that ticked off, I went to the UK, finding work at Deloitte and Diageo before returning to Perth in 2010. I have an interest in cross border issues which stems from my experiences overseas and professional qualifications in Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom.

My family now occupy most of my spare time. I have 3 boys so managing football teams and umpiring t-ball games feature prominently. I especially enjoy the community feel and opportunities to meet other parents.

You might find me cycling to work during the week and I often join the early morning suburban peloton on the weekends.

Whilst the clients I deal with cover a very broad range of industries, I have specific expertise in property taxation, property ownership structures, and technology.

Perth, WA and Australia is my home now.

With over 20 years of professional experience in the Tax and Business Advisory Services sector working in mid-tier firms, I have built successful client relationships providing accounting, taxation, and general business advice to private clients, small to medium-sized businesses as well as corporate clients.

Having early exposure to accounting and business management through my father’s experience running large manufacturing businesses, I have been passionate about providing business advice to SMEs who value the trusted adviser role. I had the opportunity to work in Commerce as a Financial Controller for a large multinational business, which provided me with insights into the business needs and concerns clients face when running their own business. This allows me to be hands-on with helping clients achieve their business and wealth management goals.

I have a keen interest in business processes and information technology which includes the development of new technology that has provided me with extensive knowledge to deliver practical business solutions to clients looking to embrace Cloud Accounting and business improvement as well as the R&D Tax Incentive.

Within the broad industry sectors including technology, manufacturing, and retail sectors, I have worked with several family-owned SMEs providing business advisory, tax consulting, and R&D tax incentive services.

I am a member of CA ANZ, being a Chartered Accountant, and the Tax Institute of Australia as a Chartered Tax Advisor.

In my downtime, I love spending time with my family, planning camping trips away, seeing the occasional movie, and playing Golf or Cricket.

I have been assisting clients with tax and business advice since 2006, when I joined Deloitte Private Clients in Dublin as a tax graduate. Although I had spent only 2 weeks in Western Australia while backpacking around the county in 2005, I couldn’t quite shake the memory of the pristine beaches. In 2012 I moved to Perth, on spec, and began working with Knight as an accountant. In this role I was fortunate to get a really good grounding in Australian tax, working with a likeminded team who are passionate about helping clients to accomplish their financial, family and life goals. I enjoy the diversity of my current role, managing the ongoing accounting and tax needs of my client base, while also supporting my colleagues as the lead tax specialist at Knight.

Since 2012 I have attained the qualifications of Chartered Accountant, Chartered Tax Adviser and Accredited Family Business Adviser with Family Business Australia. More recently I have become a collaboratively trained financial neutral with Collaborative Professionals WA. This is a relatively new approach to achieving out of court family law settlements. It involves a team of experts in family law, finances, tax and mental health collaborate together to guide couples and families through this process.

I have held the position of Head of Accounting and Tax at Knight since July 2022.

I have been working in the financial advice industry since graduating University in 2007. I commenced with Knight in 2014 and in my time in the industry have accumulated a wealth of experience in delivering strategic financial advice to my clients across superannuation structuring, personal and business risk protection (insurance), retirement planning and tailored investment strategies to assist clients to maintain and grow their wealth.

I believe that the best advice should be understandable and directly relate to achieving a client’s financial or life goals. Above all, advice needs to be actionable.

I am a graduate of the University of Western Australia (UWA), holding a Bachelor of Commerce (B. Com) and am a Certified Financial Planner (CFP©). In my personal time, I enjoy travelling, time spent with friends and family and keeping active playing sports and going to the gym.

Born and bred in country Victoria, I studied Accounting and Marketing at Monash Uni in Melbourne and went on to become a Chartered Accountant in 2009.

I loved the city and the people, but not so much the weather or commute. In 2012 I came West with my now husband in search of change and adventure, but what I found was a lifestyle where I really felt at home.

Knight has been a significant part of my growth here, supporting me from day one, both socially and professionally. Knight has embraced my thirst for challenge, facilitating my further study in Applied Finance and Business Analyst courses.

As a lover of competition and the thrill of team success, I coordinate the Knight AFL 9’s team while also playing netball and basketball. When not on the court or field, you will find me trying Perth’s newest restaurants.

I have been a proud member of the Knight team since 2021. My route to finance took a scenic detour—I kicked off my career in Agriculture, dabbling in horticulture and wine production. Post-undergrad, I switched gears to Business Development in Australia’s construction industry, diving into finance in 2019.

Outside the financial world, you’ll find me cherishing moments with my wife and son, relishing the outdoors, and seizing any chance to BBQ while catching a rugby match.

My passion for working at Knight comes from the ability to help clients decipher financial jargon and tailor solutions to their needs. The gratitude I receive from clients for sorting out their finances is the real reward, not to mention the strength of the Knight team members to enable growth, collaboration and outstanding outcomes.

I started my career in a boutique financial planning firm in 2000 before moving to a larger stockbroking and financial planning firm. I added a quick foray into accounting to increase my knowledge base before returning to financial planning in 2013 and joining Knight in my current role. While based in Albany, I travel regularly to meet clients in Perth, Busselton and the general South West, Peel, Great Southern and Wheatbelt regions.

I’m an active member of the community, having been on several executive sporting committees in Albany over the years. Currently I am the President of the Albany Triathlon Club and an Audit Committee Member of a large independent natural resource management organisation.

When I’m not at work you can find me partaking in some form of exercise to keep fit, soaking up any sunshine I can find (lizard… literally basking in the sunlight) and spending time with my extended family and friends.
